Shehan Ambepitiya, who won three gold medals at last weekís Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, receiving a cheque from the IAAF President.

The 18 year old schoolboy from Gateway College completed a grand sprint double by winning gold medals in the menís 100 metres and 200 metres respectively after guiding his team towards victory in the menís 4 X 100 metres relay final in the on going Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Ambepitiya noted that it was at the backdrop of some uncertainty that he took the field but was able to clear all odds and win gold medals with the guidance of his experienced coach Sunil Gunawardena.

Ambepitiya said that his parents are the main force behind his success and believed that his record breaking performances in India would bring a great amount of satisfaction back at home. Ambepitiya who was placed seventh at the World Youth Championships in Poland, said that although his mother is ill her blessings and the words of encouragement gave him the extra strength and the courage to go on and win three gold medals for the country.

Ambepitiya did not hesitate to pay tribute to his dynamic coach Sunil Gunawardena who has taken all the hard work and effort to produce a certain medal prospect for the next Asian Games in China and also for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He noted that the presence of his coach Sunil Gunawardena made a huge difference and impact on his overall performances both physically and mentally
